Bio

Rooted in the gayageum, traditional song, and samulnori she studied in childhood, Jayoung Chung draws on these as the wellspring of her artistic world. Though trained in fine art, after graduating from the Interactive Telecommunications Program (ITP) at New York University she has continued to develop interdisciplinary performance work that combines gayageum, dance, film, drawing, and performance on a foundation of media technology. Centered on audience-participatory, interactive work themed around empathy—sharing in the suffering of others—she works actively across New York, Korea, and Berlin. Her work has been exhibited and performed at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMCA), Seoul Citizens' Hall, Sejong Hyundai Gallery, the Asia Culture Center, Eyebeam, the Bemis Center, Yaddo, the Watermill Center, and the Edward Albee Foundation residency, among others. Following works addressing the Sewol ferry disaster and the Brothers Home, Licht—an interdisciplinary narrative performance on the May 18 Gwangju Uprising, selected through the 2018 Media Wall open call—was met with wide acclaim and restaged in 2019. That same year, she was invited to present the closing performance of ISEA (the International Symposium on Electronic Art) at the Gwangju Traditional Culture Center, where her projection-mapping-based interdisciplinary performance drawing on Korean traditional instruments and pansori earned international recognition.

On receiving the Young Artist Award at the 29th Catholic Art Awards, Chung began to expand in earnest an artistic world of faith and theology under the rubric of "Arts and Christianity." The awarded work, Living Altar [Der lebendige Altar] (2025), is an installation created in and around Groß St. Martin church in Cologne, Germany, and was presented in 2026 at the awardees' exhibition (Gallery Bogojae). Chung believes that the mystery of the Incarnation—by which the body of Jesus Christ entered this world through the doors of the five human senses—continues today in the Mass and the Eucharist. On this understanding, through interdisciplinary work joining image, sound, light, body, and space, she explores "the mystery present within the senses" and experiments with the possibility of a new liturgical experience within the contemporary moment.
