Living Altar

This installation reinterprets the traditional triptych structure of the altarpiece through the medium of contemporary video, transforming the altar into a living theological stage. The central projection depicts the Passion and Resurrection of Jesus, precisely synchronized with shifts in lighting to reveal the symbolism of the "body being lifted up." Two lamps symbolize candles, and the altar itself is presented as a "symbolic hearth," burning with the fire of love and sacrifice. It evokes both the body and tomb of Christ, while also suggesting the place where suffering survivors are offered as living sacrifices. Above the altar, three video panels form a contemporary reinterpretation of the medieval triptych. The 3-minute sequence traces the journey from the Last Supper to the Resurrection, with the moment of Christ's elevation perfectly aligned with changes in illumination.

On the two vertical side panels, gestures of suffering individuals and postures of prayer from the contemporary world alternate, visualizing a point where human affliction encounters the response of faith. This composition renews the traditional role of triptych wings, which historically expressed the human response to divine action. The central light of the Resurrection envelops the dark and urgent movements of the side panels, creating a visual theology in which the harsh reality of suffering is transfigured by the radiance of grace. As a result, the altar emerges not as a site of past sacrifice but as a "space of present resurrection," embracing and transforming the wounds of our time.

이 설치작품은 전통 제단화의 삼면화 구조를 현대 미디어 언어로 변형하여, 제대를 하나의 살아있는 신학적 무대로 재구성한다. 중앙 영상은 예수의 수난과 부활을 다루며, 빛의 조명과 정밀하게 싱크되어 '들어 올려지는 몸'의 상징을 드러낸다.

두 개의 전등은 촛불을 상징하고, 제대(altar)는 사랑과 희생의 불로 타오르는 '상징적 제단'으로 제시된다. 제대는 예수 그리스도의 몸이자 무덤을 암시하며, 동시에 고통받는 생존자들이 바쳐지는 제물의 자리를 나타낸다. 그 위에는 세 개의 영상을 설치하였는데, 이는 중세 제단화의 전통인 삼면화(triptych)를 현대적으로 해석한 구성이다. 영상은 '최후의 만찬'에서 '부활'에 이르는 여정을 3분간의 영상으로 담아내며, 예수의 몸이 들어 올려지는 순간과 조명의 변화가 정밀하게 맞물려 있다.

양옆의 세로 패널에는 고통받는 동시대 인물들의 몸짓과 기도의 자세가 교차하며, 인간의 수난과 신앙의 응답이 맞닿는 지점을 시각화한다. 이 구성은 전통 삼면화에서 날개가 달아온 '인간의 응답'의 자리를 현대적으로 갱신한다. 중앙의 부활의 빛은 양쪽 패널의 어둡고 절박한 몸짓을 감싸며, 고통의 현실을 은총의 빛으로 전환시키는 시각적 신학을 형성한다. 그 결과 제대는 단순한 과거의 제사 장소가 아니라, 동시대의 상처를 품고 변화시키는 '현재적 부활의 공간'으로 새롭게 드러난다.
